Course Description

This module provides pharmacists with a comprehensive review of effective patient education delivery for patients in oncology care settings. This module highlights four pillars that are essential for a meaningful counseling module and continued monitoring, such as communication techniques, adherence assessment strategies, managing adverse events, and appropriate documentation/resources. Upon completion of this module, pharmacists will be able to develop a strategy for education and establish themselves as a key player on the oncology care team.


Learning Objectives

  1. Employ effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills with multiple patient populations in different oncology practice settings
  2. Recall strategies to improve patient adherence to oncology medications
  3. Describe effective approaches to manage adverse events and appropriately convey this information to patients
  4. Describe successful methods for identifying useful patient education resources

This module includes an ACPE Pre- and Post-Test, an eLearning course, and a course evaluation. You must complete all of these module activities, in order, before claiming ACPE credits.

Presenters

Eve Segal Headshot

Eve Segal, PharmD, BCOP, is the Clinical Pharmacy Operations Manager at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, WA. She obtained her PharmD from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science University in Boston, MA. She completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Norwood Hospital in Norwood, MA, and a PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency from St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute in Boise, ID.

In her current role, Eve is responsible for developing and supporting clinical pharmacy services and operations for oncology patients. She is dedicated to advancing pharmacy practice, mentoring staff, and developing clinical programs in oncology. Eve also continues to support oncology patients as a clinical pharmacist in various disease-focused solid tumor clinics.

Sommer Gay Headshot

Sommer Gay, PharmD, BCOP, is a Clinical Oncology Pharmacist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, WA. She specializes in the care of patients in the breast, gynecologic, and neuro-oncology clinics, where she is primarily responsible for reviewing both IV and oral chemotherapy regimens and providing education to patients regarding their treatments. Originally from Green Bay, WI, Sommer earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She went on to complete her PGY1 Acute Care Residency and PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. Outside of work, she enjoys cheering on the Packers, exploring Seattle's vibrant food scene, and spending time with her husband and their adorable French bulldog.

HOPA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

To claim ACPE Credits the learner must complete all required activities, including the pre- and post-tests, and course evaluation. CE's will be reported within 1-2 weeks of completion of the credit claim activity.
