Extravasation is a rare occurrence, but being prepared and having a plan is critical for patient safety.  This module helps pharmacists establish or improve their practices to provide accurate and efficient care during an extravasation.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the difference between a vesicant and an irritant.
  2. Identify risk factors and strategies to prevent extravasation.
  3. Recognize and manage drug extravasations per accepted national standards/guidelines.
  4. Formulate policies regarding extravasation.

This module includes an ACPE Pre- and Post-Test, an eLearning course, and a course evaluation. You must complete all of these module activities, in order, before claiming ACPE credits.

Nancy M. Nix, PharmD, BCOP received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia, College of Pharmacy, in Athens, GA. She completed post-graduate training at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and the University of Georgia, College of Pharmacy and Cone Health Cancer Center in Greensboro, NC. Dr. Nix is a member of the Hematology Oncology Pharmacy Association, the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacists. She is board certified in pharmacotherapy and oncology pharmacy by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. Dr. Nix serves as a clinical preceptor for the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University.
