This module provides an overview of the requirements and best practices for preparation and disposal of hazardous medications.


Course Description

Sterile and non-sterile hazardous drugs have more handling precautions than non-hazardous medications in order to keep the health care worker at minimum risk for exposure. This module describes environmental and equipment controls, as well as compounding and disposal practices required to handle hazardous medications.

Learning Objectives

Part I

  • Describe regulations and recommendations for hazardous drug handling.
  • Discuss processes to create and utilize a hazardous drug list
  • Understand the importance of an Assessment of Risk and the role they play in hazardous drug handling
  • Review best practices for the receipt, storage and transportation of hazardous drugs

Part II

  • Describe facility/engineering requirements to prepare sterile and non-sterile hazardous drugs
  • Review benefits of containment supplemental engineering controls (closed system transfer devices) for hazardous compounding
  • Demonstrate donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) for a hazardous clean room environment
  • List the steps and essential materials needed to clean up a hazardous medication spill

This module includes an ACPE Pre- and Post-Test, an eLearning course, and a course evaluation. You must complete all of these module activities, in order, before claiming ACPE credits.

Philip Schwieterman obtained his bachelors and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from The Ohio State University and his Master of Health Administration from the University of Kentucky. Philip joined UK HealthCare as a Pharmacy Director in 2013 where he has led numerous financial, clinical, and operational initiatives surrounding the growth and oversight of oncology, infusion, specialty and pediatric pharmacy services. He currently serves as the Director for Oncology and Pediatric Pharmacy Services.
