Participants will be exposed to the fundamental concepts of oncology pharmacology. Topics include an introduction to basic oncology concepts, including the cell cycle, hallmarks of cancer, and basic oncology terminology. This module covers concepts including adverse effects, routes of administration, and drug interactions of common medications and medication classes used in the treatment of cancer.


Course Description

Participants will be exposed to the fundamental concepts of oncology pharmacology. Topics include an introduction to basic oncology concepts, including the cell cycle, hallmarks of cancer, and basic oncology terminology. This module covers concepts including adverse effects, routes of administration, and drug interactions of common medications and medication classes used in the treatment of cancer. At the end of this module, participants will have the foundational building blocks necessary to begin to understand the role of medications in the treatment of cancer.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe basic oncology concepts, including the cell cycle, hallmarks of cancer, and basic oncology terminology.
  • Discuss medications used in the treatment of cancer including medications in the following categories: traditional chemotherapy, small molecule inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, and immunotherapies.
  • Understand the mechanisms of action for different classes of cancer medications.
  • Identify unique and common adverse events related to the pharmacology of medications used in the treatment of cancer.

This module includes an ACPE Pre-Test, Module 1 Content, Post-Test, and Module 1 Evaluation. You must complete all of these module activities, in order, before claiming ACPE credits.

Alexis Kuhn, PharmD, BCOP is an ambulatory clinical pharmacist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and Pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Kuhn's clinical and research interests include both non-malignant and malignant hematology, as well as pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Over the years, she has fostered a passion for educating future generations of pharmacy and medical professionals in hematology/oncology.

Erin Hickey Zacholski is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy. She serves patients as an oncology pharmacist on the Gynecologic Oncology team at VCU Health Massey Cancer Center. Erin earned her PharmD from VCU, then completed PGY1 and PGY2 - Oncology Pharmacy residencies at the University of Kentucky HealthCare. Dr. Zacholski's scholarship interests include chemotherapy supportive care, dose-optimization, and fostering student interest in and learning of oncology pharmacy.
