Module 6: Designing and Implementing Supportive Care Plans
Course Description
The primary goal of chemotherapy is to eradicate malignant cells. Traditional cytotoxic agents target rapidly dividing cells; however, this mechanism of action also affects healthy tissues with high cellular turnover. Damage to normal cells, such as hematopoietic and mucosal cells, can result in clinically significant toxicities, including fatigue, infection, mucositis, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Effective prevention and management of chemotherapy-induced adverse events are essential to optimize patient outcomes and maintain treatment continuity. This module provides an overview of the recognition, prevention, and management of common chemotherapy-related toxicities, as well as the identification and treatment of oncologic emergencies.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize an adverse effect associated with drug therapy for a patient with cancer
- Explain the management strategy for an adverse effect associated with drug therapy for a patient with cancer
- Recognize an oncologic emergency based on patient symptoms
- Recall the management strategy for an oncologic emergency
This module includes an ACPE Pre- and Post-Test, an eLearning course, and a course evaluation. You must complete all of these module activities, in order, before claiming ACPE credits.
