Course Description

This module is designed to educate pharmacists on the principles of investigational drugs and the requirements pertaining to conducting a clinical trial for human subject research. The module describes various types of clinical trials, goals of each trial phase, and it covers aspects of the pharmacist's role in assuring compliance to federal regulations and prerequisites for appropriate investigational drug storage and temperature monitoring. Upon completion, pharmacists will obtain expertise in documentation of drug accountability and knowledge of procedures, staffing, and workflow required to implement a pharmacy investgational drug service.


Learning Objectives

  1. Differentiate between the various phases of clinical trials
  2. Discuss pertinent requirements for drug accountability records
  3. Recognize standards for establishing investigational drug pharmacy services
  4. Identify standard operating procedures that are needed to ensure accurate storage and handling of investigational medications
  5. Describe the role of an investigational drug pharmacist

This module includes an ACPE Pre- and Post-Test, an eLearning course, and a course evaluation. You must complete all of these module activities, in order, before claiming ACPE credits.

Jennifer Murphy Headshot

Jennifer Murphy, PharmD, BCOP, is a Senior Pharmacist in the Cancer Center Investigational Drug Service at UC Davis Health. After graduating from UCSF School of Pharmacy with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree, she completed an Acute Care Pharmacy PGY1 Residency at UC San Diego Health and a PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at UC Davis Health.

As a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist, her primary area of practice is at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center IDS Pharmacy. In this role, she is actively involved in oncology clinical trial protocol development and quality improvement projects as well as various institutional committees. Additionally, Dr. Murphy serves as the PGY2 Investigational Drugs and Research Pharmacy Residency Program Director and holds a volunteer faculty position as an assistant professor at UCSF School of Pharmacy.
