Together We Lead, Learn, and Grow!

Do you want to share your life-changing work with the next generation and inspire the future of hematology/oncology pharmacy? Sign up to join HOPA's Student Engagement Program!

Developed with the help of HOPA member volunteers, the Student Engagement Program brings an interactive, customizable educational experience to middle and high school students, teaching others about the role of the oncology pharmacist and its many career paths. Through this program, students can:

  • Discover the diverse array of roles and career opportunities within the pharmacy profession, specifically focusing on oncology care
  • Appreciate the essential contributions pharmacists make to patient outcomes and quality of life in the fight against cancer
  • Spark interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy, with a specific focus on oncology, shaping educational and professional aspirations

The Student Engagement Program is designed with students in mind. Sessions can last anywhere from 1-3 hours and include:

Didactic Presentation (60 minutes)

  • During this portion of the program, you and your fellow presenters will present information about the pharmacy profession, including common career paths and basic information about cancer and cancer therapies.

Ice Breaker Activity (45 minutes)

  • Students will work together to march a drug name to their mechanism of action and common side effects. Your role during the activity is to circulate the room and guide students through any questions they may have during the activity. (Cell phone or computer is required.)

Roundtable Discussion (30+ minutes)

  • Either alone or with your other pharmacist presenters, you converse with students to learn about their interests and discuss what your career in pharmacy has been like. (Questions have been developed to assist with these conversations.)

HOPA gives you the basic outline, resources, and toolkits: YOU bring the experience to life, curating and customizing the program to the wants and needs of your particular students.
