"I am so happy and honored to be a candidate for the At-Large Board Member position on the HOPA Board.
"I think some people in this position would be focused on explaining how their career as a manager or director has prepared them to be in a leadership position on the Board. Although I think that is fantastic, that's not me. I've been a clinical pharmacist since I finished residency. I have never been in a formal management position in my career, but what I have been is someone who actively seeks out other leadership roles and is constantly looking for innovations to make the lives of my patients and colleagues better. I've been fortunate to chair the Patient Outreach and Education Committee for HOPA and be a part of the amazing things that group has done to advocate for patients and educate pharmacists on how to advocate for themselves and their patients.
"In my oncology pharmacy career, I love starting new things. In my first job after residency, I created a new position at an academic medical center bringing specialized clinical pharmacy services into the clinic for the first time. After that, I moved to a general oncology clinic in a rural setting and was the first clinical pharmacy specialist there, and all along the way I started multiple new initiatives and procedures to improve the lives of the people I work with and the patients I serve.
"I have been a HOPA member for over ten years and since about six years ago I've been working to become more and more involved every year. For the first few years of my membership, I struggled to figure out where I belonged or where my input could matter most as a young practitioner. I wanted to participate, but I felt like I was an outsider in a club that I was supposed to be a part of and I didn't know how to break in. Because of this experience, part of what I hope to accomplish on the Board is to continue to improve the ways for new members and members in non-traditional areas of practice to participate so that from the start, they feel the inclusion and desire to be involved that I now feel.
"As a Board member, I bring a love for innovation and improvement, a proven drive to bring ideas to fruition, and a desire to include oncology pharmacists from every background and career path at the table. I am so appreciative of the opportunity to be a candidate to serve on the HOPA Board and am excited to use my next three years improving the lives of oncology pharmacists and patients."
