Statement of Need/Activity Purpose
Pharmacists are lacking information and education regarding Health Literacy. In the oncology field, it is very important for patients to have excellent health literacy to understand complicated regimens and medication information. This session will focus on tips for the oncology pharmacist on how to create and assess information appropriate for patients using health literacy information and levels.
Learning Objectives
- Review health literacy definitions and current literacy levels.
- Describe the process for creating patient information that is on the appropriate literacy level for patients.
- Determine strategies for identifying patients’ health literacy and incorporating that into the patient-pharmacist interaction.

Oncology Pharmacy Manager at University of Minnesota Health Oncology Infusion Pharmacy
Rebecca (Becky) Fahrenbruch, PharmD, BCOP graduated from University of Nebraska Medical Center with her Doctorate of Pharmacy. She then completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Southwest Washington Medical Center, an Oncology Specialty Residency at MD Anderson Cancer Center and became a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist in 2002. She is the current Oncology Pharmacy Manager at University of Minnesota Health Oncology Infusion Pharmacy in Maple Grove, Residency Program Director for PGY2 Oncology Residency, and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota COP. She continues to be involved in leadership roles, committee work, and speaks for many local and national organizations.
