BCOP Recertification through HOPA

HOPA provides opportunities for pharmacists to earn continuing pharmacy education credit toward recertification of their Board Certified in Oncology Pharmacy (BCOP) credential by offering six specialty sessions (BCOP Sessions) at the HOPA Annual Conference each year. These sessions are repeated at the ACCP Annual Conference and the ASHP MidYear Meeting. HOPA also develops and administers an online post-test annually on the HOPA U website for those who attend these sessions and want to receive six hours of BCOP Recertification credit.

BPS: Board of Pharmacy Specialties

BPS, the Board of Pharmacy Specialties, provides the certification process for the BCOP, which certifies specialists in Oncology Pharmacy and includes an initial certification exam. BPS requires recertification, either by exam or through continuing pharmacy education. For more information about the certification process, please visit the BPS website at www.bpsweb.org. Pharmacists do not have to be HOPA members to attain BCOP certification.

Maintaining BCOP Certification through Continuing Pharmacy Education

A Board Certified pharmacist must earn 100 BCOP recertification credits every seven (7) years to maintain the BCOP specialist certification.

HOPA develops six (6) specialty sessions for BCOP recertification credits offered at the HOPA Annual Conference each year. BCOP-certified pharmacists who attend all six (6) sessions and pass the online test hosted on www.hopau.org will receive six (6) BCOP credits towards their recertification.

The content presented at the HOPA Annual Conference is repeated three times through the year, by the same faculty. The BCOP Sessions may also be taken at:

American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Annual Conference in October.

American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) MidYear Meeting in December

In January, results of the post-tests and BCOP recertification credit are submitted to BPS on your behalf.

(There are two other programs pharmacists can earn additional recertification credits throughout the year. They are called the BCOP Review Course and Syllabus and are administered through ACCP. The due date for completion of these programs is November 30th. For more information, please visit the ACCP website at www.accp.com.)

The BCOP Recertification Post-Test on HOPA U

The HOPA U online test site is open to all BCOP-certified pharmacists who have attended all six (6) specialty sessions at one meeting. Once the specialty sessions have been completed, an email with a link to the test site will be sent. Six Recertification Credits will be awarded upon passing the test. The test fee is $45.00. You must take the Recertification Credit test by December 31 of the year you take the sessions.

Getting ACPE (CE) Credit for the sessions

Any pharmacist can attend the specialty sessions for ACPE (CE) credit. A Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist may earn Recertification credit and ACPE credit for the specialty sessions.

BCOP Recertification Frequently Asked Questions

1. I recently was certified in Oncology Pharmacy. What is the recertification process? Once an individual passes the certification examination, the length of certification is 7 years. For recertification, specialists may elect to take an examination or earn 100 credits through continuing pharmacy education. HOPA provides six credits annually through the live specialty sessions. Additional courses are available through ACCP and ASHP. For more information contact the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS).

2. How many hours can I earn toward BCOP recertification from HOPA's specialty sessions? HOPA provides six hours of recertification credit when you pass the post-test, and since the courses and test are new each year, you may earn six credits every year.

3. I attended the six specialty sessions at the HOPA Annual Conference in March this year but I did not take the post-test. Can I still get my recertification credits? Yes, the post-test is available through December 31st each year. If you did attend all six sessions, please contact HOPA for the link to the post-test. The test costs $45.

4. I only attended four of the specialty sessions at HOPA. Can I still take the post-test? The test is only available for those who attend all six sessions at one meeting, but you have two more opportunities each year. The sessions will be repeated at the ACCP Annual Meeting in October and at the ASHP MidYear Meeting in December.

5. Can I earn ACPE credit for the specialty sessions if I am earning recertification credit? Yes, all education sessions offered at the HOPA Annual Conference are eligible for ACPE credit for relicensure, so be sure to evaluate the specialty sessions when you complete the online evaluations for the conference. Whether you attend the specialty sessions at HOPA, ACCP or ASHP, HOPA is the accredited provider of the ACPE credit.

6. If I don't pass the post-test, can I retake it? No, the test may be taken only once each calendar year.

7. Even though I passed the test this year, I am going to be short a few hours for my recertification. Is there another way I can earn hours? You can earn additional recertification hours through the review course and home study materials provided by ACCP and ASHP.
