The University of Virginia (UVa) Health System consists of the Medical Center and approximately 50 acquired practice sites. The Medical Center is a 600 bed, Level 1 Trauma Center serving a primarily rural population in Central Virginia. The Medical Center features a physician order entry computer system, extensive ambulatory care services, an organ transplant program, regional burn and spinal cord injury centers, children’s hospital, and many other innovative health services. UVa has achieved Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. UVa will be opening a long term acute care facility and the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center in 2010 and 2011, respectively.

The Department of Pharmacy Services provides centralized dispensing services and decentralized clinical services and employs clinical pharmacy coordinators and clinical pharmacists. The Department has a state of the art IV clean room. In addition, the department has three ASHP-accredited residency programs and serves as a training site for the experiential education of pharmacy students from Virginia Schools of Pharmacy. The department also operates pharmacist-run outpatient clinics and an outpatient dispensing pharmacy.

In April 2011, UVa will be expanding outpatient clinical pharmacy services with the opening of the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, and is recruiting for clinical pharmacists to join the Hematology Oncology team. Oncology clinical pharmacists divide their work time between inpatient clinical services, the cancer center infusion center, and central pharmacy. The successful candidate will join a team of experienced practitioners working under the leadership of the clinical pharmacy coordinator for Hematology/Oncology to ensure the safe and effective use of medications by providing optimal drug product selection, dosage regimen design, effective administration and drug therapy monitoring. Clinical pharmacists monitor patient drug therapy, actively participate in interdisciplinary health care rounds, provide pharmacokinetic and therapeutic consults, patient education, report ADRs, perform MUEs, respond to code-12 calls, and assist with precepting pharmacy students and PGY1 pharmacy residents. Team members provide care for patients on the inpatient heme/onc service and the outpatient infusion center. Members of the heme/onc pharmacy team are actively engaged in the development of Beacon Oncology treatment plans in EPIC and will continue working on system improvements after implementation.

  • Build clinical disease management programs around cancer supportive care products, disease focused programs
  • Work with Onmark affiliated groups to develop Disease management tools
  • Develop reports and reporting capabilities to provide to Clinical Disease management participating practices

Provide Scientific leadership around Continuing Education and Advisory Board Programs for physicians, nurses and pharmacists including (oncology and rheumatology focus primarily):

  • Development of program agenda
  • Speaker identification for recruitment
  • Help project manager with Budget development
  • Clinical collateral development oversight in conjunction with the marketing team and outside communications company vendor/project manager
  • Scientific/clinical Program materials development oversight including PowerPoint slide presentations, background materials for the program binder, CD Rom inserts, in coordination with project manager
  • Development of an appropriate list of advisor questions for each stage of Advisory Board Meetings.

Provide Support to Data analysts around report generation from proprietary data accumulated from physician offices on oncology and rheumatology drug utilization patterns.
Requirements for this position include:

  • Pharmacist - PharmD or MD
  • Clinical residency is preferred
  • At least 1 year of oncology experience either through a residency, or practical experience
  • Experience with implementing programs (educational programs, tools development, other)
  • Experience working with and analyzing data-preferred
  • Experience with developing and working with on-line (web-based) clinical applications and tools-preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Excellent computer skills including: MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, Outlook, preferably have MS Access skills
  • Must be willing and able to travel to fulfill the requirements of the job
