HOPA Activities and Goals To reduce the burden of cancer on society and promote optimal, cost-effective care for people affected by cancer, HOPA will
- Provide educational activities through its scientific conferences, website, newsletter, written communications (eg, educational monographs, treatment standards, and guidelines), and clinical training programs (residencies, fellowships, traineeships) for oncology pharmacists and other healthcare professionals who care for cancer patients. Through these educational initiatives, HOPA members will be able to incorporate contemporary and best practices into cancer care, maximizing patient benefits while minimizing suffering and costs due to possible medication errors and adverse effects.
- Promote cancer prevention initiatives, such as tobacco cessation and healthy eating programs, through publications and its website, which will reduce the cancer burden and ultimately reduce healthcare expenditures for cancer treatment.
- Develop and endorse best-practice standards for clinical cancer care. These standards will promote evidence-based guidelines to support clinical decisions. By providing up-to-date, literature-supported clinical recommendations, therapy will be optimized, adverse reactions reduced, and healthcare dollars saved.
- Educate oncology pharmacists about medication-error prevention through its website, conferences, and publications.
- Provide grants to pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to conduct research regarding cancer prevention, cancer treatment, and supportive care therapies.
- Support cancer patients and people affected by cancer by serving as a national drug information resource through its website, newsletter, and chat-with-a-pharmacist sessions.
- Promote and support certification of oncology pharmacists, which optimizes drug therapy and reduces healthcare costs.
- Join with other cancer organizations, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), to meet the National Cancer Institute’s goal to eliminate cancer suffering by 2015.
- Serve as the pharmacists’ advocate (to complement advocacy provided by oncology physicians [ASCO] and nurses [ONS]) in political matters related to cancer therapies.
